Sept. 19 Parkersburg South game game
Big Reds Rally From 11 Down
At Half to Beat Patriots 20-17
Game Statistics
The city showdown between Parkersburg and Parkersburg South lived up to its billing as the Big Reds rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit to defeat the Patriots 20-17 Friday night at Stadium Field.
Two evenly matched teams played an even game until PHS junior quarterback Alex Greer fake a handoff and kept the ball up the middle into the end zone from a yard away with 6:32 remaining in the contest and Cole Sisk’s kick put PHS on top 20-17.
The winning touchdown came after PHS lost a big play that saw Tytan Parsons make an incredible one-hand catch to the South one yard line but the play was wiped out by an ineligible downfield penalty on the Big Reds.
PHS had to punt after the penalty but the ball was downed on the South 12 and the field position remained in favor of the Big Reds who forced a punt and got the ball back to begin a drive from the South 25. A 15-yard run by Ethan Jones moved the ball to the six and on third and goal Greer got the touchdown.
South ran nine plays on its next possession but netted just 27 and on fourth and 11 from the PHS 43 Devin Widman sacked South quarterback Kinzyn Lutchmansingh for a two-yard loss.
With only two minutes left to play PHS hoped to run out the clock but a personal foul penalty forced them to punt and South had a chance with less than 20 seconds to play and while the Patriots did complete a pass for 27 yards it was not enough as the clock expired.
The statistics for the game were even with 11 first downs for South to 10 for PHS and the visitors ran 48 plays for 244 yards while PHS had 40 for 236. Each team had over 70 yards in penalties while there was only one turnover (an interception by South).
Greer ran for 70 yards on 14 carries and completed five of eight passes for 73 yards and a touchdown to Austin Craven in the third quarter. Ethan Jones had the other PHS touchdown on his team’s first offensive series as he rushed for 66 yards on 11 carries.
That first series saw the Big Reds march down the field 67 yards in just three plays thanks to a 36 yard pass to Cole Sisk and a 29 yard run by Greer. The extra point was missed but PHS was ahead with just 3:13 off the clock.
South was able to answer that with a 78-yard, 11-play drive that was highlighted by a 15 yard completion to Logan Graham and a 15 yard personal foul penalty against PHS. The touchdown came on a pass to veteran receiver Taj Joyce from nine yards away.
Joyce then gave South a 14-6 lead just four plays into the second period when he outraced the defense to score from 67 yards away.
With just 22 seconds left before the half, Ja Qwae Brown broke loose for a 29 yard run which set up a 21 yard field goal by Wyatt Bartley to put the Patriots up by 11, 17-6.
But the Big Reds took the second half kickoff and quickly drove 53 yards on six plays with Greer passing to Austin Craven on a quick pass over the middle from 23 yard away after Tyler Cameron had just completed a 13 pass to Jones.
South could generate little offense in the second half and good field position enjoyed by PHS was capped with Greer’s go-ahead score.
Now 2-2 the Big Red defense was led by Widman and Austin Jones with 12 and 10 tackles respectively.
